How to generate database setup files (Oracle 8i/9i - Windows).

Note: More specific information is contained within file#39 which is created during the file generation process. File#39 contains the actual file names of the scripts which have been custom-generated for a particular database instance.

1) Open the Installgen application.

2) Enter appropriate database creation parameters in the General, Backup, Files/Tablespaces, Options and SGA tabs. Note: For 9.2.0 databases the XDB feature is added whenever the JServer feature is installed. If an XDB tablespace has not been configured, it will be automatically added at the same mount point as the USERS tablespace.

3) Create a folder or directory which will hold the output files.

4) Verify that the Output directory field on the General tab is correct.

5) Select Save As from the File menu to save the configuration information for this particular database server.

6) Press the Generate button to generate the setup scripts/files.

7) Create and share the directory to hold the scripts on the server.

8) Insert the oracle_build1 CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer where the scripts were generated. Execute the commands in the file#1 script from the build directory. The Windows utilities, install scripts and Oracle patch file(s) will be copied to the directory on the Oracle server.

9) Execute the file#2 file from the directory on the Oracle server. This file will install ActiveState Perl, MinGW (GNU gcc compiler for Windows), and the Perl Mail::Sendmail module.

10) Execute the file#3 Perl script on the Oracle server.
This script creates and creates the directories which will contain the Oracle datafiles, the backup directory, archivelog directory and the directories where the Oracle software CDs will be copied for the installation.

The 3 Oracle 9i install CDs are copied to the Oracle server's hard drive.
The Oracle Java based installer is run in silent mode to install the database software and then the OEM/OMS (client and server components) software.
The file#17 script is run in order to build the database instance with the requested features.

11) Execute the file#4 Perl script on the Oracle server.
This script applies patches to the database and performs the following post-install tasks:
adds DBA accounts to database
changes default passwords for SYSTEM,OUTLN,DBSNMP accounts
prompts for installation and scheduling via the AT scheduler of the file#13 script - Rotate Server logs nightly at 11:55PM
creates RMAN Tablespace (if needed)
creates RMAN Repository Owner Account (if needed)
grants privileges to the RMAN account (if needed)
creates OEM Tablespace Name (if needed)
creates OEM Repository Owner Account (if needed)
grants privileges to OEM user account (if needed)
creates the OEM repository using Enterprise Manager Configuration Assistant (EMCA) (if needed)
starts the Oracle Management Server (if needed)
prompts for starting the Oracle Intelligent Agent on each database server (if needed)
prompts for using the Enterprise Manager Console to create administrator accounts (if needed)
prompts for using the Enterprise Manager Console to discover each database (if needed)
creates the RMAN repository in the OEM server database instance (if needed)
prompts for scheduling of OEM backup and performance tuning jobs: (if needed)
creates DBMS.STATS table for gathering database stats

12) Perform a full backup of the database to test the backup process
(and a full export too if possible).
